What size hail will damage my roof?

This varies according to the age (brittleness) of the roof and the degree of perpendicularity of the hail strike. In general, 1/2″ hail or smaller will do little or no damage to most roofs, other than cracking of polyvinylchloride coatings. 3/4″ hail may damage roll roofing and older composition shingles. 1″ hail and larger is likely to damage most roofs, even slate.

Is it really necessary to have roof-top vents in my home?

Proper ventilation reduces energy bills, winter ice buildup and eliminates mold and mildew, which can lead to major health problems. By ventilating, you are extending the life of other building components, shingles, insulation, etc. Our hot Texas summers can destroy both a roof and its underlying decking.

I’ve heard about discounts for impact-resistant roofs. What’s the story?

First, don’t confuse impact-resistant with hail-resistant; they are not the same. While it is true that insurers can now give premium discounts on new roofs using UL2218-compliant roofing, those materials may not be hail-proof, and their increased cost may not offset the discount.

How can I avoid paying my deductible on an insurance claim?

The short answer: you can’t. Some roofers will increase the bid to cover that deductible and rebate it to you, but that practice is illegal and we do not engage in it. Mid-Cities Roofing, Inc. is a respected, permanent and local company, and we won’t cheat the insurers or you.

What is the difference between Certified Roofing Contractors and those not certified?

Certified Roofing Contractors simply prove that by passing the certification exam, they have the technical and business knowledge to provide top quality service, and they must provide proof of liability insurance. Mid-Cities Roofing, Inc. is a Certified Residential Roofing Contractor.

How does the certification program help prevent consumers from being taken by “fly-by-night” operations?

All Certified Roofing Contractors are required to prove that they have been doing business in Texas for at least three years. These are usually established, qualified contractors who plan to be around for a long time. After all, a warranty is only as good as the company that offers it.

Why isn’t the lowest bid always the best deal?

There are many factors in addition to cost. A roof needs to be done right the first time, or you may face high repair costs and even have to have the roof entirely redone.

The roof on our building is 9 years old. Can a regular maintenance program be stablished that is more cost-effective than replacing the roof?

Yes. Our experts can estimate the condition and longevity of your roof, then prepare a proposal comparing maintenance costs to replacement.
