Everyone needs a strong and sturdy roof over their head. If you’re a homeowner and therefore own that roof, you’re eventually going to need to repair or replace it. If you don’t know much about roofing or roofing contractors, it’s can be a scary situation to be in. We’re here to help! We’ve compiled a list of the 7 questions you need to ask your roofer to ensure that you’re going to get the best service possible. Now then, let’s get started!
1. How Long Have You Been in Business?
Don’t be afraid to ask your roofing contractor how long their company has been in business. Not only is it appropriate to ask, as a paying customer, but it’s also 100% your right to know. Don’t be afraid to ask about the experience level of the employees who will be physically doing the work, especially the lead guys. After all, it’s your money and your home that we’re talking about here.
2. Do You Have Insurance?
Ask your roofing contractor if they’re insured. You can also ask to see proof of said insurance, as every company should be able to access those documents with ease.
3. Are You Licensed?
Make sure your roofing contractor is licensed. Each state is a little different, so be sure to research what licenses are required for your state and then go from there. Again, your roofer should be able to provide proof that they are indeed licensed, so you can ask to see those documents if you have any doubt.
4. What Kind of Warranty Am I Getting?
Confirm with your roofing contractor that you’re getting a warranty for your repaired or replaced roof. Warranties differ per company and are much better for full roof replacements. In other words, make sure that you understand the warranties that are being offered before making a decision. For instance, a repair to your roof may be cheaper up front, but perhaps your roof is getting up there in age. A full replacement could give you a brand new roof with an extended warranty, meaning you wouldn’t have to worry about your entire roof for decades. That peace of mind could be worth the extra costs to replace your roof fully instead of making a costly repair.
5. How Will Payment Be Handled?
Understand how much money you will owe your roofing contractor and when that money is due. You don’t want to be surprised with an expensive bill due the moment the job is complete. Make sure you understand the payment process completely before committing. Most companies offer financing options. Ask plenty of questions and be sure to have a firm grasp on everything (interest, monthly payments, etc.) before signing any paperwork.
6. What Kind of Materials Do You Use?
When it comes to materials, a good roofing company will offer you plenty of options. These materials will differ in price, aesthetics, and durability. Take your time choosing and ask a lot of questions. Your roofing contractor should be able to help you make the best choice for you and your situation.
7. Can I See Your Past Work?
Ask to see other homes that your roofing contractor has worked on. Some companies may even let you speak to past customers about their experience with the company. Enquire about that option if that’s something you’re interested in. The internet is a wonderful place as well. Most companies have reviews on Google that you can check out as well.
